PAL Tutor Job Description
Provide academic assistance to tutees, individually or in small groups. Help students with study skills and course content.
Qualifications
Academic
Tutors must have received an A or B in the courses to be tutored and a 2.0 GPA, with a 2.5 GPA preferred. Sophomore, Junior or Senior status at NIU , enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours. Ability to tutor in more than one course area is preferred.
Personal
A positive attitude about tutoring.  Sensitivity, understanding and the ability to relate to students with varying academic levels and needs.  Good communications skills.
Responsibilities
Attend a mandatory of 4 hours of training and all other assigned meetings
Meet with assigned students on time and be prepared to:
--Contact assigned tutees before initial meeting to arrange tutorial appointment
--Contact tutees if they miss tutorial appointment to verify future sessions
--Work with tutees on course content, study skills and self-concept

Establish clear lines of communication with tutees, PAL Assistant Director and other NIU staff as needed
Maintain accurate and complete tutoring records including
--Student absences
--Reports in the form of Session Record Sheets (SRS)
--Schedules
--Payroll-Turn in SRS within payroll dates in order for time sheets to be completed

Maintain confidentiality of tutoring relationship

Application
--Come to Williston Hall Room 100 and fill out an application , you may click below for a printable application
--Set up an interview date with the Assistant Director for PAL, Hillard Hebda, after you have submitted your application and reference
--Attend 4 hours of Tutor Training through our Certified Training Program
Compensation

--Tutors are paid a minimum of $7.75 per hour
--Tutors can work for a maximum of 20 hours per week.  
--Tutors submit hours on Session Record Sheets, sign their time sheets and are paid twice a month.


Summer Office Hours are 7 am - 5 pm, Mon. thru Thurs
PAL Hours are 8:30AM until 4:30PM, Monday through Friday, Williston 100.
